Adult Sailing Classes
Part of the mission of West River Sailing Club is to introduce people to the sport of sailing.  To meet this goal, qualified members offer instruction to help people become confident and comfortable in small sailboats.  We use small sailboats because no they don’t require great physical strength to adjust the sails or to steer, and also because they provide immediate feedback to all sailors’ actions.
WRSC provides adult sailing courses to club members and the public, ages 18 and up. The goal of these courses is teach the basics of sailing and to encourage participation in the sport through active learning. Our objective is to spend as much time on the water as possible, focusing on the basic mechanics of sailing.
The club offers sailing instruction to adults in two kinds of boats: 19 foot Flying Scots and 15 foot Albacores.  The Flying Scot program lasts two days, while the Albacore program extends over four days.   Classes are held at the WRSC Clubhouse in Galesville and on the West River
What we do:
• Explain calmly and in simple terms the principles of sailing
• Use small, safe boats for on-the–water instruction
• Have instructors alongside in small powerboats to coach and provide assistance
• Provide plenty of on-the-water practice time in sheltered and safe Tenthouse Creek
What we don’t do:
• Yell
• Use large boats requiring great physical strength
• Sail in areas with lots of boat traffic

Learn to Sail Brochure

In addition to our Learn to Sail program, there are several Albacores are available through the West River Sailing Club for use on a shared basis. For those who join this shared boat program, we offer training and the use of an Albacore during club activities.

WRSC is one of the most affordable sailing clubs in the area and the “provisional” membership makes it very affordable to try for a season while you meet new friends and explore if sailing is right for you.  Sailing on the Chesapeake with the West River Albacore Fleet is a low cost way to learn to sail and have fun throughout the summer.  Several Albacores are now stationed on the WRSC floating docks, enabling easy launch and recover. The use of a crane is not necessarily, as they boats are essentially on the water and ready for use.

Use of the Albacore Fleet boats is coordinated by the West River Albacore Fleet and requires membership to WRSC and a small $150 annual fee to cover maintenance and storage expenses of the fleet boats.  Participation is limited to four shares per available boat to enable maximum fun and use for all.

Shared boat members include approved graduates of the WRSC Learn to Sail and Learn to Race classes, experienced sailors wanting to get back into sailing/racing, and sailors wanting to try our versatile boat for fun sailing, good racing, and the added bonus of a great social group.

For more information and to sign up, please contact the WRSC Albacore Fleet Secretary.
