Jr Sailing School

Welcome

From its first junior program in 1953, WRSC has a long and successful history with young sailors, turning out some of the best sailors in the country.

Our instructors instill not only a respect for the water, but also teach the techniques and skills required to sustain a life long passion for the sport, always keeping at the forefront the most important elements of teaching young children – safety and fun!

Mission

Our goal is to develop technical expertise in sailors to enhance a life-long passion for sailing in a safe and fun environment.  After safety, sportsmanship, courtesy, respect and teamwork are the cornerstones of our program.

Each week culminates with a special activity -- a treasure hunt sail to High Island in the Rhode River, Pirate Day or a quiet picnic to Round Bay to observe the horseshoe crabs hatching their young.  If you are unfamiliar with the club, it is situated along the banks of the West River in the historic village of Galesville, MD, just 15 minutes south of Annapolis.  The tranquility of the area – undisturbed by power boats and commercial watercraft -- enhances the safe and calm environment in which the children are taught.  For further information on the junior sailing school, contact Nan Irey at ireys@comcast.net

Junior Sailing School

Our program runs from Monday, June 22nd through Friday, August 7th with instruction for all sailing skill levels.  For our returning sailors and their families, welcome back to another exciting and fun season with our outstanding and experienced instructors.  For new families, we look forward to welcoming you to our club, its outstanding sailing school program and all the benefits of sailing on the West River.

Our Junior Sailing School offers instruction in the following fleets:

Optimist The Opti has become the gold standard for junior sailing.  According to the official Opti site (USODA), over 150,000 kids in more than 110 countries are sailing in Optimists.  The Opti is an eight-foot, single-handed dinghy designed specifically for junior sailing and racing.  Given its stability, safety and ease of sailing, it is the perfect boat for teaching beginner-sailors as well as challenging the young racing enthusiast.  Most young sailors remain in Opti’s until they age out at 15.  WRSC has a fleet of Optimists for our summer sailing school and Green Fleet racers.  Those returning racers who have moved on to White, Red or Blue Fleet are encouraged to bring their own equipment.
Club 420 The 420 has become one of the most popular double-handed youth boats today, primarily used in high school and collegiate racing programs.  Designed for a skipper and crewmember who must work as a team for optimal performance, the spinnaker and trapeze provide an opportunity for additional strategic skill & technique development.  The boat is sturdy and safe for those sailors with the experience and weight to move out of the Opti Fleet.  (WRSC requires that the skipper and crew have a combined weight of at least 220 lbs. for safety reasons.)
Laser While West River does not own any Laser’s, instruction is available with your own equipment.  This boat, a move up from the Opti Fleet, is an Olympic class, single-handed sailboat with three rigging options:  full, radial and 4.7.  For optimal performance and safety, West River encourages its junior fleet racers between the ages of 15 & 17 who are interested in Laser racing to use a radial rig.
