Cruisers Wine & Cheese Party, Awards |
|
Event Chair: Eleanor Holmes 703-759-9305 holmes.eleanor@gmail.com
One of the first cruising events of the year is the wine and cheese party, held this year on Saturday February 21st at the West River clubhouse. Eleanor Holmes and Phil Rost are leading the event, and plan to collect a variety of wines from the world-famous Silesia Wine store in Fort Washington, MD. Those of you who sampled the wine the past several years will remember the wonderful selection. The pot-luck dinner will be followed by our annual presentation of awards, presented to those who participated in multiple cruises in 2008. Details will be published by Eleanor in advance if the event.

Cruiser's Symposium |
|
| |
Mel & Molly Converse |
|
| The WRSC Cruising Fleet and the Chesapeake Bay Tartan Sailing Club (CBTSC) will again be hosting a Cruisers’ Symposium with speakers on several different topics of interest to cruising sailors. The event will also include a Nautical Flea Market, providing members of both clubs with opportunities to pass some of their unused treasures on to new owners. A Notice of Event will be issued by Mel and Molly as we get closer to the event. |

Club Officers |
|
| Ancient sailors knew that brightly colored bits of
cloth snapping in a fresh breeze drove away any lingering dull gray
hobgoblins of winter. And the more color the better. So dress ship
and come on down to the clubhouse for this annual rite of passage.
It’s the first big event of the year where all of the fleets
get together. Bring a guest, renew old friendships and make new
ones. Proper attire for this event will be required. |

Early Bird Cruise |
St. Michaels |
| Cruise Leaders: |
Molly & Mel Converse (703) 777-2749 |
|
| In a decade-old tradition, the Early Bird Cruise kicks off our cruising season this year with a 24-mile trip to St. Michaels. We hope to again utilize the facilities at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, and members will likely be able to arrange dock space through Mel. Alternatively, there is plenty of space this time of year for anchoring, and two other marinas have transient slips which can be reserved. There will be the usual happy hour on the Museum grounds Saturday afternoon. There are several good restaurants in St. Michael’s for those who want to dine ashore that evening. We're also aiming for early Sunday breakfast for the group at Chesapeake Cove. More details in the NOC as we get nearer to cruise time. NOC |

Not Mayday Cruise |
Glebe Bay |
| Cruise Leader: |
Mic Osman |
|
| If your craft wasn’t ready for the Early Bird, here’s your chance to get into the swing of things. If you made it to St. Mikes, here’s another opportunity for some great spring cruising. Glebe Bay is just around the corner off the South River, and it’s a perfect distance for a shakedown cruise. Bernie and Ev will organize the party at the other end, so look for the NOC with the details, and come join us! |

Cruisers Safety Symposium |
WRSC |
| Cruise Leader: |
Logan Hottle |
|
| Following on the success of our joint event with the Tartan Club in 2008, we have laid on plans for a seminar on boating safety, to be organized and presented with assistance from the Chesapeake Bay Bristol Club. This is an area of broad interest to sailors, and we anticipate a program that will be of mutual benefit to the respective clubs. Our own Logan and Will Hottle will provide the inter-club coordination for this affair. |

Newcomer's Cruise |
Dunn Cove |
| Cruise Leader: |
|
|
Combined with the Memorial Day Cruise/
The Newcomers Cruise is an on-the-water event where new cruising members, inactive cruising members, want to be cruisers, and the frequent cruising members gather for a bit of socializing, sharing snacks and drinks, and talking and telling tall tales all focused on sailing. Boat tours are encouraged. We typically raft as the weather permits. This year the cruise will have as its destination Dunn Cove, a delightful spot with plenty of both room and protection, off Broad Creek just north of the eastern end of Knapps Narrows. Stay tuned for details that will be available on the WRSC home page and in the Newsletter.. |

Memorial Day Cruise |
Wye River |
| Cruise Leaders: |
Joe & Pat casey |
|
| This is traditionally one of the most popular cruises of the season. With the long weekend we have more time to play after arriving at the site chosen for rafting. Pat and Joe have run this cruise a good number of years and always plan for a nice time. And maybe Dave Dawson will treat us to his almost world famous omelets. Let’s kick off the event at the clubhouse on Friday evening where we can have dinner with the other fleets at the Friday Night Barbeque. Raft-up in Tenthouse Creek right off the club pier or arrive by land. Pat and Joe will distribute a more detailed schedule of activities closer to the weekend of the cruise. Look for it in the newsletter, on the website, and in your email. |

Spring Rendezvous |
Cantler’s Riverside Inn |
Cruise Leaders:
Regatta Chairs: |
Romany/Rost-Holmes |
(301) 257-1435
(703) 867-0596 |
| This is one of the two cruises that combine Big Boat and Cruising Fleets, and involve an optional race. Saturday morning the cruisers and big boat racers will gather off Pirate’s Cove pier to start the point-to-point race to Hackett Can, at the entrance to Whitehall Bay. After reaching a finishing line, we’ll sail or motor into Whitehall Bay, through the “S” turn that has at least 8 feet of water at the entrance to Mill Creek, and we’ll anchor a few hundred yards upstream from Cantler’s. Dinner plans are open at this time, but there is always the option for Cantler’s (crowded, but offering a good casual seafood meal). Afterwards, you can look forward to a quiet night anchored safely in what many consider the best hurricane hole on the Bay. Sailing back on Sunday is at your leisure –racing not required. For that matter, racing is not required on Saturday, either, by why not?? NOC |

Theater Night |
Annapolis |
| Cruise Leaders: |
Al and Vicky Lohman
Pete & Pokey Emens |
|
| Come by boat or by car and enjoy an evening under the stars at the Annapolis Summer Garden theater. This gem is located almost exactly across the street from Fawcett’s (Annapolis Harbor). ASGT is a local theater company that performs on an outdoor stage under the stars. Al & Vicky and Pete & Pokey will be moored at Port of Annapolis, which is between the Marriott Hotel and the Annapolis Yacht Club. They will host a “heavy hors d’oeuvres” gathering on their boats beginning at 5:30. Please bring an appetizer to share. From there we will walk to the theater for the 8:00 pm show. Tickets are $15.00 and reservations are required, but you will pay at the door. Hope to see everyone there. Stay tuned to the newsletter (NOC), website and E-vite for more details. |

Summer Cruise-Fireworks Cruise |
Mobjack Bay |
| Cruise Leaders: |
Monty Schumpert |
410-757-0077
703-625-5488 |
| The summer cruise for 2008 is planned to be in the vicinity of the Choptank River, with possible short cruises to St. Michaels, Oxford, Cambridge, and the Little Choptank, depending on local communities' fireworks display during the July 4th holiday week. In addition to the marinas, there are numerous beautiful anchorage sites in the vicinity of the Choptank, so we will take advantage of those, as well as the comfort and utility of the marinas. Then, depending on fireworks displays and other events on the Western shore, we will migrate back to home waters to try to capture those or a BBQ at the club for the July 4th weekend. Details to follow as we get closer to late June. |

Sea/Land Cookout Cruise |
Whitehall Bay |
| Cruise Leaders: |
Monty & Susan Schumpert |
|
| Monty and Susan have offered to open up their new home off of Whitehall Creek just northeast of Annapolis, where they will host the West River Cruisers at a by-land-or-by-sea dinner. Anchoring will be available in Whitehall Creek off of Whitehall Bay, with easy access to land, and a short stroll to their abode. Alternatively, should the weather not cooperate on the Northern Bay, it will be acceptable to arrive via land cruiser. Be sure to include this event in your plans for the July 4th weekend. |

Sailing Emporium |
Rock Hall |
| Cruise Leaders |
Linda Baker |
|
| Regarding the Sailing Emporium, we all know how fickle the winds can be during the hot summer months. Rock Hall and its obliging marina, the Sailing Emporium, offer our group a predictably wonderful summer respite. Sailing north under the bridge is typically straightforward; the final leg of the trip is well marked and easy to negotiate, even for the first time visitor. While the trolley-accessible town, with its rich maritime history and ever-welcoming ice cream shop, is wonderful, the marina itself is a mini-vacation getaway. Well amenitied, the Sailing Emporium includes a refreshing pool, marina store, and great picnic grounds as well as the expected boat-side services. We will plan to meet on the picnic grounds for cocktails, to be followed by potluck side dishes and a bring-your-own for grilling. Watch for the NOC for further details. |

WRSC Annual Crab Feast |
WRSC |
| Event Chairs: |
Greg Whalen |
|
| WRSC’s biggest summer party has become a mainstay of the cruising schedule, involving the whole of the West River club. Since crab supply has been rather questionable the past several years, this could become a non-crab event, but will be a major one in any case, even if just to enjoy the Maryland sweet corn which is typically superb and at its peak at this time of year. With a big tent on the lawn, this is an event not to be missed. Watch for the notice and details as we get closer to the big day. And pray for a recovery of the crab market. NOE |

Gibson Island Cruise |
Magothy River |
| Cruise Leaders: |
Kathy & Don Mueller
|
(703) 669-9292 |
| This cruise has been one of our most popular. We will be taking slips again at the Gibson Island Yacht Squadron’s harbor facilities. They can accommodate our whole fleet; the docks are new, the shore facilities excellent, and the staff is professional and friendly. Dinner at the Gibson Island Club is an ancillary benefit of this cruise. With the Magothy being less than 20 miles from the West River, the cruise is a breeze (no pun intended) for boats large and small. We know from 2008 that rain or shine, this cruise is a delight. As we get closer to the event, Kathy and Don will provide additional details. NOC |

Labor Day Cruise |
Solomons Island |
| Cruise Leaders: |
Dan Rothermel |
|
Come join us on this "Summer Ending" cruise south to Solomons Island on the Patuxent River which has evolved into one of our more popular cruises. We'll plan to leave Galesville on Saturday morning and enjoy what is usually a delightful sail down the bay arriving mid to late afternoon. Plans are still being developed, but we expect to use Zahniser's Yachting Center as our marina headquarters. Each boat will need to make their own slip arrangements. Anchoring off Zahniser's is always an option. The Cruise Leader’s boat, “Sea Eagle”, will host the usual happy hour(s). We expect that the University of Maryland research center will be available for touring for those interested. Other attractions include Calvert Marine Museum, walking around and shopping in town as well as dinner at the Dry Dock Restaurant. It should be a wonderful and relaxing weekend. We'll leave for home on Monday morning. Watch for further details in the NOC and other club publications. NOC

Fall Fling |
Baby Owl Cove |
| Cruise Leaders: |
Erick Chang |
|
Oxford this year.
The skipper of LAPIN AGILE is looking for another nice early Fall cruise to the Choptank River. Now that he has mastered the marks in Knapps Narrows, he’ll hopefully leave the bottom mud in place as he enters with his deep-draft speedster. The venue has changed slightly from prior years to an anchorage off Broad Creek that is well protected, yet can hold our whole fleet. Sailors will continue to argue about whether it’s “Baby Owl” or “Boby Owl” (as shown on the charts, but what’s a “boby”?!). Either way it’s a great anchorage, so be sure to put this one on your cruise agenda. |

Indian Summer Cruise |
Captain’s Choice |
| Cruise Leaders: |
Nadine & Larry Schneider |
|
| This cruise will be Nadine’s choice, but the smart money is on a late-summer visit to St. Michaels. This town is delightful any time of year, and experienced cruisers know that once is not enough. It’s an easy sail over from the West River, and plenty to do when you get there. Keep your eye on the newsletter for up-to-date info as plans shape up for this cruise. |

Fall Rendezvous |
Dividing Creek–Wye River |
| Cruise Leaders: |
Kandy & Lincoln Phillips heywood268@juno.com |
(301) 330-2471 |
| By the middle of October the fall colors have started to appear in the trees and the wind is crisp and cool, a perfect setting for the Fall Rendezvous. We join up with Big Boat club members and sponsor a race that ends just outside the entrance to the Wye River. Later in the afternoon we make our way into Dividing Creek, raft up and enjoy the evening with pot luck appetizers, shrimp and oysters. The Hallie Q is the anchor boat for the main raft and the party, but second and third rafts are usually formed. The cruise leaders and regatta chair will distribute a detailed schedule for the event as the date approaches. Look for an announcement in the WRSC Newsletter, on the club web site and in your e-mail. We hope to see everyone in Dividing Creek! |

Frost Bite Cruise |
Annapolis Harbor |
| Cruise Leaders: |
Rachel & Dave Dawson |
(301)
340-8026 |
Join us for the last affair of the WRSC 2008 cruising season. Early November is generally a great time for sailing, and the crowds are gone. It’s usually easy to find an open mooring in Annapolis Harbor on Saturday afternoon. The short hop of 12.5 miles from Hartge’s makes for a great sail, or you can join us by car. Look forward to cocktails and nibbles on Cephas Dawson at a location in the Annapolis Harbor to be announced later. Keep in touch with the cruise leaders for possible dinner plans. We’ll get back together for Sunday brunch at Buddy’s Crabs and Ribs. Look for more information closer to the event, in the newsletter, on the website and in your email. |
