Early Bird Cruise

St. Michaels

Cruise Leaders: Molly & Mel Converse (703) 777-2749
In a decade-old tradition, the Early Bird Cruise kicks off our cruising season this year with an interesting 24-mile trip to St. Michaels.  Dates are 12-13 April.   There is plenty of space for anchoring.  The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum will have some dock space limited to Museum members.  Most have power connections.  The Museum has requested that I consolidate the reservation requests and in that regard will need the LOA, beam, draft, power preferences and number of crew for each of the boats.  This information can be sent to me once participation of the boat in the cruise is definite but no later than 8 March.  There are also two marinas with transient spaces for those who wish to make other arrangements.  There will be the usual happy hour on the Museum grounds Saturday afternoon.  There are several good restaurants in St. Michael’s for those who want to dine ashore.  More details in the NOC as we get nearer to cruise time.  We're also aiming for early Sunday breakfast for the group at Chesapeake Cove. Flag Raising

WRSC

  Don Mueller
Ancient sailors knew that brightly colored bits of cloth snapping in a fresh breeze drove away any lingering dull gray hobgoblins of winter. And the more color the better. So dress ship and come on down to the clubhouse for this annual rite of passage. It’s the first big event of the year where all of the fleets get together. Bring a guest, renew old friendships and make new ones. Proper attire for this event will be required.

Newcomer's Cruise

Harness Creek

Cruise Leader: Joe Casey
The Newcomers Cruise at the start of 2008 cruising on the Bay is an on-the-water event where new cruising members, inactive cruising members, want to be cruisers, and the frequent cruising members gather for a bit of socializing, sharing snacks and drinks, and talking and telling tall tales all focused on sailing.  Boat tours are encouraged.  We typically raft as the weather permits.  This year the cruise will have as its destination Harness Creek on the South River or possibly one of the nearby creeks that flow into the South River. Stay tuned for details that will be available on the WRSC home page and in the Newsletter.

Memorial Day Cruise

Cruise Leaders: Pete & Poke Emens (301) 358-1617
This cruise is one of the most popular as summer kicks into gear.  The long holiday weekend allows an extra day to enjoy the beautiful anchorage off Drum Point in the Wye River. Start the weekend off right at the Friday Night Barbeque, then on to the Eastern Shore Saturday to Monday.   Sunday morning sports a fleet tradition favorite: Capt. Dave's famous omelets. The Notice of Cruise will be in the newsletter, on the website, and in your email. NOC

Spring Rendezvous

Cantler’s Riverside Inn

Cruise Leaders:
Regatta Chairs:
Romany/Rost-Holmes (301) 257-1435
(703) 867-0596
The annual race-within-a-cruise to Mill Creek will take place on June 14 and 15, 2008.  Saturday morning the cruisers and big boat racers will gather off Pirate’s Cove pier to start the point-to-point race to Hackett Can, at the entrance to Whitehall Bay.  After reaching a finishing line hopefully a little longer than we had last year, we’ll sail or motor into Whitehall Bay, through the “S” turn that has at least 8 feet of water at the entrance to Mill Creek, and we’ll anchor a few hundred yards upstream from Cantler’s.  Dinner is at Cantler’s, and usually consists of lots of crabs and other seafood dishes, after which we spend an always-quiet night anchored safely in what many consider the best hurricane hole on the bay.  Sailing back on Sunday is at your leisure – no more racing this weekend.

Theater Night

Annapolis

Cruise Leaders: Al and Vicky Lohman
Pete & Pokey Emens

Come by boat or by car and enjoy an evening under the stars at the Annapolis Summer Garden theater. This gem is located almost exactly across the street from Fawcett’s (Annapolis Harbor). ASGT is a local theater company that performs on an outdoor stage under the stars. Al & Vicky and Pete & Pokey will be moored at Port of Annapolis, which is between the Marriott Hotel and the Annapolis Yacht Club. They will host a “heavy hors d’oeuvres” gathering on their boats beginning at 5:30. Please bring an appetizer to share. From there we will walk to the theater for the 8:00 pm show. Tickets are $15.00 and reservations are required, but you will pay at the door. Hope to see everyone there. Stay tuned to the newsletter (NOC), website and E-vite for more details. NOC

Summer Cruise-Fireworks Cruise

Choptank River

Cruise Leaders: Monty Schumpert 410-757-0077
703-625-5488
The summer cruise for 2008 is planned to be in the vicinity of the Choptank River, with possible short cruises to St. Michaels, Oxford, Cambridge, and the Little Choptank, depending on local communities' fireworks display during the July 4th holiday week. In addition to the marinas, there are numerous beautiful anchorage sites in the vicinity of the Choptank, so we will take advantage of those, as well as the comfort and utility of the marinas. Then, depending on fireworks displays and other events on the Western shore, we will migrate back to home waters to try to capture those or a BBQ at the club for the July 4th weekend. Details to follow as we get closer to late June. NOC

Sailing Emporium

Rock Hall

Cruise Leaders Linda Baker
Regarding the Sailing Emporium, we all know how fickle the winds can be during the hot summer months.  Rock Hall and its obliging marina, the Sailing Emporium, offer our group a predictably wonderful summer respite.  Sailing north under the bridge is typically straightforward; the final leg of the trip is well marked and easy to negotiate, even for the first time visitor.
While the trolley-accessible town, with its rich maritime history and ever-welcoming ice cream shop, is wonderful, the marina itself is a mini-vacation getaway.  Well amenitied, the Sailing Emporium includes a refreshing pool, marina store, and great picnic grounds as well as the expected boat-side services.  We will plan to meet on the picnic grounds for cocktails, to be followed by potluck side dishes and a bring-your-own for grilling.  The cruise leaders will supply the charcoal for the grills, as well as a birthday cake for Larry…….it’ll be his birthday weekend! WRSC Annual Crab Feast

WRSC

Event Chairs: Pete Tollini
WRSC’s biggest summer party has become a mainstay of the cruising schedule and this year will be bigger than ever. With a big tent on the lawn and the mobile steamer delivering the freshest crabs and sweetest corn possible, it’s an event not to be missed. Since crab prices are volatile, watch for the notice and details in late June.

Sea/Land Cookout Cruise

Herrington Harbor South

Cruise Leaders: Pete Tolini / Greg Whalen
August 16th and 17th.  The heart of the Dog Days. Will it be hot? The odds are pretty good. So do you stay home in the A/C, watching Survivor reruns or take a short sail to a tropical resort?  That’s right, Herrington Harbour South (HHS) complete with palm trees, tiki bar and best of all, a pool.  Enjoy a happy hour at poolside, then head up the hill for a cookout at Pete and Cindy Tollini’s home. Look down the hill and enjoy the great evening. Then after dinner and the view, it’s all downhill (literally) to the tiki bar, the pool or your dock. To help you with docking we'll arrange some slips available for overnight.  HHS has some great slips, tennis courts, beach volleyball and its restaurant can serve up a great breakfast Sunday for that not so long voyage home. So what do say?  A quick 10 mile cruise down, a slip in HHS and dinner at the Tollinis?  Back to the boat for some late refreshments, did we mention the tiki bar, a good night's sleep, some breakfast and then back home.  .  NOC

Labor Day Cruise

Solomons Island

Cruise Leaders: Dan Rothermel

Come join us on this "Summer Ending" cruise south to Solomons Island on the Patuxent River which has evolved into one of our more popular cruises.  We'll plan to leave Galesville on Saturday morning and enjoy what is usually a delightful sail down the bay arriving mid to late afternoon.  While plans are still being developed we are planning to use Zahniser's Yachting Center as our marina headquarters.  Each boat will need to make their own slip arrangements.  Anchoring off Zahniser's is always an option.  Our boat, Sea Eagle, will host the usual happy hour(s).  We expect that the University of Maryland research center will be available for touring for those interested. Other attractions include Calvert Marine Museum, walking around and shopping in town as well as dinner at the Dry Dock Restaurant.  It should be a wonderful and relaxing weekend.  We'll leave for home on Monday morning.  Watch for further details in the NOC and other club publications. Fall Fling

La Trappe Creek

Cruise Leaders: Erick Chang
The Fall fling in 2007 was more like a Fall flight down and across the Bay with following and reaching winds of 20 – 25 knots.  Not unexpected for the time of year.  In 2008, the current plan is the same venue as 2007, La Trappe Creek, near Cambridge Maryland.  It is a straightforward sail across the Choptank River.  Hopefully winds will be similarly obliging.  However, stay tuned because these days, crew and skipper of LAPIN AGILE look for the days of fair winds and following seas, so dependent on the forecast, the venue could change. Gibson Island Cruise

Magothy River

Cruise Leaders: Kathy & Don Mueller
dkmueller@adelphia.net
(703) 669-9292
This cruise has been one of our most popular.  We will be taking slips again at the Gibson Island Yacht Squadron’s harbor facilities.  They can accommodate our whole fleet; the docks are new, the shore facilities excellent, the staff professional and the fees are reasonable. Dinner at the Gibson Island Club is an ancillary benefit of this cruise.  And with the Magothy being less than 20 miles from the West River, the cruise is a breeze for boats large and small. As we get closer to the event, Kathy and Don will provide additional details. NOC

Oct 4-5

Oktoberfest Cruise

Captain’s Choice

Cruise Leaders: Stuart White

Come join us for plentiful German food at The Old Stein Inn, 1143 Central Ave., Edgewater, MD 21037. We are going to anchor and hopefully raft up (weather permitting), in Selby Bay. Dingy docking will be at either Holiday Point Marina (in Selby Bay) or under the Turkey Point Bridge into Ramsey Lake. The Old Stein Inn is not within walking distance, so we will provide transportation from the dingy docks. Mick and Vicky have volunteered to shuttle people to the restaurant as needed. We will have more information the closer we are to the cruising date. I will be looking into ala carte and fixed menu prices.

Fall Rendezvous

Dividing Creek–Wye River

Cruise Leaders: Kandy & Lincoln Phillips
heywood268@juno.com
(301) 330-2471
By the middle of October the fall colors have started to appear in the trees and the wind is crisp and cool, a perfect setting for the Fall Rendezvous. We join up with Big Boat club members and sponsor a race that ends just outside the entrance to the Wye River. Later in the afternoon we make our way into Dividing Creek, raft up and enjoy the evening with pot luck appetizers, shrimp and oysters. The Hallie Q is the anchor boat for the main raft and the party, but second and third rafts are usually formed. The cruise leaders and regatta chair will distribute a detailed schedule for the event as the date approaches. Look for an announcement in the WRSC Newsletter, on the club web site and in your e-mail. We hope to see everyone in Dividing Creek!

Frost Bite Cruise

Annapolis Harbor

Cruise Leaders: Rachel & Dave Dawson
ddawson@erols.com
(301) 340-8026

Join us for the last affair of the WRSC 2008 cruising season. Early November is generally a great time for sailing, and the crowds are gone. It’s usually easy to find an open mooring in Annapolis Harbor on Saturday afternoon. The short hop of 12.5 miles from Hartge’s makes for a great sail, or you can join us by car. Meet for cocktails and nibbles at 4:30 on Cephas Dawson at Annapolis City Dock. Keep in touch with the cruise leaders for possible dinner plans. We’ll get back together for Sunday brunch at Buddy’s Crabs and Ribs. Look for more information closer to the event, in the newsletter, on the website and in your email. Note: It is important to let the cruise leaders know if you are planning to come, both for reservations and for any changes due to weather.
