Four brave and soggy Albacore
teams competed in the 65th Annual Fishing Bay Yacht Club Annual Regatta,
undeterred by Hurricane/Tropical Storm Charley. Contrary to fears, racing conditions on Saturday were in the
³light and variable² range; however, racing was carried out mostly in pouring
rain. Fortunately, Charley took a
more easterly path than was first expected, but there was some slight storminess
and some definite downpours Saturday night, which deterred camping. After a nice dinner at the Clubhouse
(inside!), all teams found shelter in motel rooms, with a ³Chips and Vodka
Cherries² party watching the Olympics at the Dockside Inn. On Sunday, there was
no rain, however, there was also no wind to race. After drifting around for about almost two hours, following
the amusing antics of the 420 sailors carrying out capsize raids on each
other¹s boats, and with no promise of developing wind, racing was cancelled,
and we paddled/were towed back to shore.
As a result of the much smaller than normal Albacore turnout than
normal, there were trophies for each team (a reward for enduring the
rain?). Still, we all appreciated
the hospitality of all the FBYC people and also their responsiveness to changing
weather conditions; this was just
an ³off year². We still look
forward to next year!
