2008 Albacore Junior National Championship

All-star Annapolis teen sailors Joe Morris and Michael Slavin captured the 2008 US albacore Junior Championship held at West River Sailing Club on August 24, 2008. The Severn School alumni opned with several first place finishes in the light winds that dominated the morning, holding off the occasional challenge from RJ Bay and Katie Scheidt of West River, MD. In the afternoon stronger breezes filled in. Morris and Slavin were pressed by former teammates Ian Duncan and Kate Schmicker of Severna Park, and Dave Schellie of Annapolis sailing wiht Emily Borch from Red Bank, NJ, but in each case, Morris and Slavin fought off each competitor to win the event with all first place finishes. Duncan and Schmicker, sailing their first regatta together combined 2nd and 3rd place finishes to take second overall in the 10 race series. Schellie and Borch came on strong in the afternon breezes, while RJ Bay's boat sufferd a breakdown in the 7th race forcing him out of contention.

The racing was open to all teens with divisions for 19 and under, 16 and under, and 13 and under. Local fleet members lent boats to those who did not own Albacores expaning the field of entries. Conditions were perfect with light winds in the morning allowing sailors to get the feel of the Albacores with fresh breeezes that showcased the Albacores' planing performance in the afternoon.
