FD UK Bosham Regatta Result

Bosham Sailing Club -  6/7 June 1997

The UK FD fleet was again welcomed by Bosham Sailing Club and enjoyed excellent hospitality and challenging racing conditions. Three races were completed. The fourth race was abandoned during the start sequence by mutual consent of the top teams who were anxious to ensure that their boats (and crews!) were not damaged in the very gusty force 7 bearing in mind the imminent Southern Area Championship at Lee on Solent (28- 29 June) and the Nationals at Abersoch (20-25 July).

The first race was sailed in a gusty force 3 to 4. Peter Doran crewed by Richard Phillips and John Best crewed by James Cole led at the first mark after a short beat. Best tacked inshore seeking less tide and better wind, Doran maintained speed but neither prevented John Berry crewed by Ian Aldridge slipping into first place by the next mark. Peter Daigneault crewed by Brian Holt and Tim Lester crewed by Roy Poole also edged in front of Doran. A close fetch to the entrance of Chichester harbour allowed the leading bunch to pull away from the rest of the fleet. Doran passed Lester and Berry pulled out a commanding lead. At the next gybe mark Doran slipped inside Daigneault. A marginal spinnaker reach followed with those who carried kites loosing out. Another lap followed with the leading three maintaining their positions despite a last minute challenge by Doran to get in front of Best. Hugh Myers crewed by Gordon Kingston gained three places on the final short beat to finish fifth behind Daigneault.

The start of the second race coincided with a large cruiser crossing the fairly short starting line against the direction of the first mark. Stephen Parry crewed by David Parr tacked off in an attempt to benefit from clear wind. At the first mark Best led with Myers in hot pursuit followed by Doran, Daigneault, Parry and Lester. The course encompassed much of Chichester harbour and eventually Best had to make the decision as to how to leave a mark to Starboard in compliance with the new racing rules....leaving it to port was clearly wrong and he retired, Myers decided to take down the spinnaker and gybe around the mark, Doran followed suite, Parry having come as far as the mark decided to leave the mark to starboard without rounding it and overtook Doran before the finish, the rest of the fleet except Neil Pye crewed by Mike Williams followed Parry's example. After reference to RRS 28 it was declared that only three boats had completed the course correctly and the finishing positions were Myers, Doran, Pye.

Brilliant sunshine and an increased wind greeted the fleet at the start line on Sunday morning for the third race. The strong tide and short start line provided a real test for the fleet. Only Best cleared the start line with ease followed by Doran. A long beat against the tide ensued and eventually Myers edged ahead of Doran. The trio of Best, Myers and Doran stormed away from the rest of the fleet which experienced mixed fortunes.

Only six boats braved the start of the fourth race with very gusty force 7 winds. Myers led Doran across the start line, with the starting flags still flying and no sound of the starting gun!! By mutual consent the race was abandoned shortly afterwards.
