Our Trip to Panama :
by Bev and Ivan Murphy #151
Date: Fall 2000
Ahoy,
Last spring we trailered our S 2 from here in Puerto Vallarta to Kansas,
Colorado and eventually to Sheboygan Wisconsin. It is now sitting on the
shores of mighty Lake Michigan.
Last year we had committed our selves to cruise to Panama on a Wauquiz 38 in November. It was a
pretty interesting trip. We left here and sailed and motored four days to Acapulco. It is a beautiful Bay
and a large noisy Mexican City. We stayed at the Club De Yates. It is a very posh facility, the nicest
restrooms I have seen on the west coast of North America. There was an S-2 at the club but we did not
talk to the owner. We went from there to Huatulco another nice bay this time we anchored out.
The next stretch of water was the dreaded Bay of the Tehuantepec. It is
about a two hundred mile stretch. The Tehuantepec is a low narrow isthmus.
Winds flow across from the Atlantic and out into the bay. There are gales sixty or more percent of the
time so it is necessary to study the weather and
pick your time. We also had some mechanical problems. We were there two weeks. If you have to be
stuck someplace I recommend Huatulco.
We went from there to Puerto San Jose in Guatemala, another four day thing. There we, Bev my wife
and I, decided that we would get off the boat and travel overland back to Puerto Vallarta. We were on the
boat a month and then another month getting back here by bus. Great to be back but now the racing is
getting going here and I sure wish we had the S-2.
Your Amigos,
Bev and Ivan Murphy
