MY TRIP ON LIAISON
by Eric Tobias, age 7
On Monday, July 14 my Mom, my sister and I took our van to Sturgeon Bay to meet my Dad after the Hook Race. We stayed at the Cherryland Motel. The next morning we went to the Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club and stayed for a little bit. There was a big pirate ship on the front lawn.
After we went for gas and food, we got on Liaison and sailed under the big bridge and through the channel to Lake Michigan. It was sunny and the sailing was nice. That afternoon we docked at Algoma. There were lots of old fishing boats in Algoma. Rainbow and Pegasus (Hook racers) were there, too. We walked to the fish store and bought some smoked chubs. We went back to the boat and ate the chubs and some shrimp and crackers for supper. Then we walked to the ice cream store and I got a great big cone but the ice cream fell off into the grass. My Dad shared his ice cream with me.
That night we slept on the boat and the next morning we had breakfast at Pier 42. Later we sailed to Manitowoc. There was a big storm that just missed us on the way and it was kind of scary, but I had my harness and my life jacket on .
When we docked at Manitowoc Marina we cooked supper on the boat with our friends from Rainbow and Pegasus. That night there was another big storm that hit us. The next morning we had a shower and then breakfast and we walked over to the Maritime Museum. We got to walk through the museum then we took a tour through the submarine (USS Cobia). We saw the Badger (car ferry) sailing out of the harbor to Michigan.
After that we walked to the gas station and bought some stuff for our trip. Later that day we sailed to Port Washington and stayed there for the night. For breakfast we went to HARRY'S (my favorite restaurant), got some ice and food and we walked back to the boat. Then we waited for the fog to lift. It was really thick, and we could see just the tops of the other boats. It finally cleared up and we left Port Washington.
We used the motor to go from Port Washington to Racine because there wasn't any wind. After we docked in Racine, we took the sailing stuff off of the boat and went into the Racine Yacht Club for a pizza.
