Or the build of Elway no2.  After first deciding to get a cherub almost two years ago the finishing line is in sight.  Still a number of jobs to do but all the vital pieces are in the garage, most of them attached to the boat or rig.  I was hoping to finish it this half term but the crew has booked a trip to Ireland instead, so early November hopefully the 2nd weekend is the target date.  I will take some new pictures and post them but here is one from a couple of weeks ago to prove Usagi does exist and isn't just a comic book character!

I think my pregnancy can beat yours for gestation time. I have been talking to David Lee since 2005 in various collaborations which included Neil Thomas. Neil actually did a load of 3D work in Rhino for a fat Cherub using Davids original 12 foot skiff Cherub lines.


Good to see you are getting there with your Ellway though.

Rumours are that there is another Banshee on the way also. So if Craig makes his one in Canada that's 4 Banshee's. So 7 new Cherubs in a year ( well almost), counting the Ellways. Nice one.

Looking good, my first boat was a good few years in planning then about 2 and a half years to build.

It is looking good, it will be great to see it on the water.

Check your Ireland ferry sailing before you go. I know most of the Stena line Fastferry crossings are cancelled this weekend, coz we're supposed to be going too. Some are off becauseof the high winds forecast, but the Stranraer-Belfast ferry has apparently broken down!

OMG!

We were thinking about upgrading earlier this year but only decided to take the plunge in later July. A shorter planning period then or am I missing something?  We haven't decided on much more than the hull yet so some of the planning will be concurrent with the build.

I think my boat was started in the early 2000s, and it's been sat with me for 18 months and not a lot has happened, despite having some very nice C tech carbon, foils and Harken kit ready to go on!

Truth is I'm at a bit of a crossroads really now.  Having been sailing 12s for a year, I'm coming to the conclusion that for me and my various "heavy weather optimised" crews, an '05 Cherub rig really is too small unless it's really very windy.  So the boat will certainly be highly influenced by 12' skiff thinking, and that does mean that it will need a fair bit more freeboard than other Slugs, especially in the bow, otherwise it will have a nasty habit of sticking it's prod into waves upwind, unless the prod points upwards which brings it's own issues.  The 3 rig, with a retractable pole and a smaller kite, will fulfil Cherub duties.

So the question is, do I stick all those nice tubes onto a glass hull that will need significant modification, or do I just leave it as it is and build a completely new carbon hull to a new design which can't be as thin as an Ellway as T foils are not allowed in 12s?  Decisions decisions!
