1662 as new mainsail

I have an 'as new' Cherub mainsail which I used only about two times before the boat rotted away. The sail has been in the back of my garage for about 15 years. When I got the sail out I found some of the glue from the numbers had leached out where the sail was folded up but otherwise it appears quite sound. The sail is just standard material, nothing fancy and there are four battens but only the top one goes through to the luff. Luff :- 5290mm Leech :- 5700mm approx Foot :- 2000mm

When you've bought your Boat...

Join the Class Association

The Class Association runs this website, organizes class events, Championships and the Class stand at the Sailboat show, and much more. Without association members none of this can happen. For your subscription you will get a class newsletter (four times a year), access to the members-only forum and the class archives. We also provide assistance for Cherub owners with maintanance tasks, tricks and tips. Unlike some classes we don't restrict our help to Association members, but we do ask you to join the Association. Most importantly Full members are the only people who can propose changes to the Class Rules, and vote on changes in the ballots.

Association Subs are currently a bargain £20.00 for full members (boat owners) and £10.00 for Associate Members (all others). This is cheaper than any comparable class. It would be really helpful if you could fill out a standing order for your Class Subscription. Please print of both these forms, fill them in and send to the Class secretary (address on the form), or you can now buy on-line.

What Boat should I Buy?

That depends completely on your aims.
If you want to win the Nationals then you will want a boat built or modified to the latest rule set . Your options for this are a) modify an older boat, b) design and build your own, c) design one and commission a builder (Bloodaxe, Aardvark, DL Boats are the three who have been used recently) or d) buy an 'off the shelf' design from Bloodaxe, Aardvark, DL Boats or RMW Marine.
As in any class it usually takes a bit of time to get to the front of the fleet, and in Cherubs there is the added challenge of modifying a boat to suit you and your sailing style. We really recommend buying second hand for your first Cherub, so you can decide what you really want for the second, Nationals winning one!
The choice of secondhand Cherubs for anyone wanting a route to the top end of the fleet is excellent, especially if you are prepared to take on a little boat surgery. You certainly want an asymmetric spinnaker, these have been retro-fitted to nearly all of the early '80s boats. Designwise anything post 2600 (and some earlier e.g. Forman 8) is fine. It takes everyone at least a season to get to the stage where boat speed makes much difference so differences in hull shapes are pretty irrelevant to start with. Foam Sandwich is the preferred method of construction, but good ply boats are fine. Although it can be done we don't advise trying to modify an older ply boat to 1997 specification or beyond (this was the source of the 'Ashes Trophy'). Much better to sail the ply boat in the 1990 spec and then get another boat - or build a new hull - after a season.
If you're considering purchasing a modern boat you're welcome to contact any of the Class Association committee to discuss the boat. They'll be familiar with the majority of boats from 2636 onwards.

If you want a boat to club sail then you have an even wider choice. All Cherubs are light and responsive, and enjoyable boats to sail for a lightweight crew.

Boats with a sail number below about 1900 date back to the first era of Cherub Design. They are significantly better in light airs than the modern cherub hulls, but slower in planing conditions. Be sensitive about extreme conditions, and you have a very enjoyable vintage sailboat that doesn't weigh a ton (a 1968 Cherub is still lighter than an RS200!).
Between 1900 and 2600 you have boats from the 1970 design revolution. Huge numbers of Forman 4s. Lots of these were amateur built, and the build quality varies. Only the good ones are likely to have survived.
Foam sandwich has been used on and off for Cherubs right back to 1970. Epoxy/foam boats (1980 on) seem to last for ever if reasonably looked after.
