To qualify for the GP series 4 events must be completed.
Grand Prix Series
UK Cherubs will be sailing windward leeward courses at 7 Grand Prix events during 2005 at a wide variety of venues. Events are programmed at roughly one per month to allow plenty of time for club sailing and other cherub events such as the popular blasting / coaching sessions we held in 2004. All of the venues have been carefully selected to ensure good sailing with Class starts at all but one meeting.
EVENT 1
The GP series kicks off at Keilder water sailing club on the 30th April. This will be the third visit in recent years to this picturesque Club in the "Heart" of the Kielder Forest. The lake itself is huge and comparable in size to Grafham or Rutland but right on the border with Scotland. There is growing cherub interest at the club following impressive big breeze displays by Mango, Norwegian and Aqua Marina who all made the trip last year. Racing will take place on Saturday and Sunday but the club is keen on running a long distance race on Monday morning if the weather plays ball.
Camping will be available at the club but for those wanting more comfort there are local B&Bs with links from the club’s website.
EVENT 2
Later in May we go to Queen Mary Sailing Club for the Inland Championships and 2nd Grand Prix event. QMSC where so impressed by the fact that the cherub sailors kept on blasting until late in the evening last year, that they invited us straight back. As well as great racing, the club will run a barbeque on the Saturday evening before the fleet retires to a suitable London venue – Chateau Lee no doubt. On Sunday racing will continue alongside those wacky hydrofoiling Moths.
EVENT 3
Weston Sailing Club has long been a popular venue for Cherub sailors through the generations, so the class was particularly pleased to be invited back for a full blown open meeting. Staged over the weekend of the 11 – 12 June the event will be held in conjunction with the Moths GP and the National 12’s Gill series and promises to be a 12 foot sailing spectacle both on an off the water.
EVENT 4
The Cherubs head off to South Wales for our four-day long National Championships at New Quay Yacht Club. Points obtained on the Saturday and Sunday will be counted towards the Grand Prix series results at the end of the series. This helps people with other commitments qualify for the GP series and sail at the premier events in the year. Expect a big turn out this year what with 6 boats in production over the winter and a strong Cherub presence in South Wales.
According to Welsh Cherub legends Gavin Sims and Simon Goodwin, New Quay is a great place to sail; dolphins are regularly spotted in the area trying to keep up with Cherubs on the downwind leg!
There’s local accommodation available ranging from Campsites to B&Bs with a couple of extra hotels on the club’s website.
EVENT 5
Scotland – more information to follow on this special event soon
EVENT 6
The smells of French cuisine and fizzy beer will be greeting cherubs that make the trip to the World famous skiff venue of Yacht Club de Carnac in Brittany. For the first time in Cherub histoire we will be joined by La Cherub Francaise who has been actively building over the winter months. Excellent sailing is virtually guaranteed at this venue right in the "armpit" of the Bay of Biscay. The sailing area is sheltered from the massive Atlantic swell you might expect in the area but still provides an exciting ride for twintanstic Cherubs.
For the non sailing partner that gets brought along there is plenty to see and do in the town and surrounding areas.
To help keep the cost of this excellent meeting down, the class is hoping to strike a ferry ticket deal. Keep your eye out on the website and in the member’s yahoo group for more information.
EVENT 7
After the excitement of Carnac we needed something pretty special to keep the interest in the GP series up right to the end – and we got in the form of a visit to one of the best inland clubs in the Country – Draycote Water Sailing Club. There is an active cherub fleet at the club with more and more interest building. As with other events it will be shared with the Moths who also have an active fleet at the club.
Last year we held an informal blasting day at the club to check out the facilities, swap boats and ideas. The club was really welcoming and even kept the bar open late for us. Ian Christie of Suicide Blonde fame put on a great barbeque (which allowed Jim Champ to show us his burger flipping skills).
