2002 Nationals Entrants.

Pos Boat Name Sail No Helm Crew Design Comments
1st Shiny Beast
2676 Andy Paterson Ross Clark Paterson 7 A few weeks ago Ross was a multihull sailor. Now he's National Champion in about as opposite a class as they come. Don't they have TV programs like that? Consistency, steady nerves, superb ligher airs speed and Patrick's OCS in the last race were keys to the win.
2nd Mango Jam
2682 Gavin Sims Simon Goodwin Buttplug So very close. Just a bit more breeze might have made all the difference, but a superb debut from the newest boat in the fleet. Launched after starring at the dinghy show earlier this year, Gavin and Simon have put a lot of hours in on the water this season, and got the boat sorted in record time.
3rd Dangerous Strawberry
2649 Mark Chamberlain Scott Willey Italian Bistro mod Mark and Scott's' high risk starting technique along with port/ starboard instances caused plenty of controversy, but they somehow got away with it most of the time, and otherwise sailed a superb first Nationals. Won a pair of tasteless pottery Clowns and the Handicap Prize.
4th Aqua Marina
2681 Phil Alderson Michael Garrington Paterson 7 mod Alderson The wingless Paterson 7 looked to be the fastest of the three in the stronger breeze. The first time they'd really raced against other Cherubs, and very respectable too. Won some hand compasses to find their way home back to Scotland.
5th Green Slug
2673 Robin Russell Will Lee Slug Loads of speed in a breeze, not much enthusaism in the light stuff!
6th Fizzy Shark
2662 Tim Dean Una-Mary Colclough Pasta Frenzy mod A reasonable but not exceptional series for Tim and Una, but still enjoying the big breeze (when not being run down by Strawberry). The Pastas are starting to struggle a bit for boatspeed against the full on 97 rules boat. Una winner of the ladies' Teapot.
7th The Pasta Frenzy
2660 Dave Roe Clare Warren Pasta Frenzy mod Another not to relish the lighter airs, and also problems with Clare having committments elsewehere for the last days. Dave's worst result for many years.
8th Little Red Number
2678 Patrick Cunningham David Hannaford Paterson 7 DSQ one race after protest, OCS another. Patrick and David - another late crew replacement - were certainly quick, but as Oscar Wilde might have said, to lose one race win might be accident, to lose both... Instead of a possible third place they took home the Didgeridon't trophy. Rarely has it been better earned!
9th Fuzzy Logic
2675 Martin Hurst Jon Garfitt Velocipede After last year's wretched luck Martin and Jon at least got a series together, in spite of some minor breakages including a daggerboard. Winners of the "Best Improver" trophy.
10th Pistrix
2666 Joe Snawdon Natalie Butcher Pasta Frenzy mod Joe and Natalie sailed consistently and had some good close battles with the other mid fleet boats.
11th Geriatric Gigolo
2650 Murray Tosh Bruce Lenton Paterson 6a All the way from Scotland, and they'd not raced other Cherubs before. An excellent performance.
12th Cheese before Bedtime
2645 Nick Hankins Nigel Sims Dog mod Good to see Cheese back on the water again after being out of action for ages during its modification. Now all that Nick needs to do is get some practice in!
13th Squid pro Quo
2677 Graham Dickenson Sarah Tindall Squid Good also to see Graham and Sarah back on the water again after many years doing other things. But they seemed to spend much of the series debugging minor gear issues with the Squid, (it's not quite a Bistro is it Graham) but they did get some reasonable results in especially in the lighter airs.
14th Eat My Wake
2617 Christopher Holman Thomas Hamilton Forman 8 mod  Finish all the races and you'll get a respectable position was the advice. Their boat was 10 years older than the next one, they've only had it a couple of months and they had to bluff or worse to get out of school for the event. A most respectable effort, and all (except possibly the two of us who were victims) were delighted to see them cross the line ahead of other Cherubs in the penultimate race. Awarded a pair of P Plates as they've passed the test and are past learner status now!
15th Little Fluffy Clouds
2643(sic) Ben Brown Daryl Wilkinson Italian Bistro mod LFC is really 2642 of course. Resplendant in a new, striking and tasteful paint job. Ben and Daryl still relatively new to the class (Ben cutting his teeth helming for Jim of course) are still on the learning curve but I expect we'll see big improvement in performance next year.
16th Halo Jones
2641 Alex Adams Jim Champ Italian Bistro mod 20knots plus out to the start was quite a culture shock for Alex Adams, who'd never sailed a Cherub in a decent breeze before. A striking new Kiwi Fyfe Sails/C-techj rig was just too much for the daggerboard, which expired on the first lap while in around 4th place. That left just too many missed races. Winner of "The Ashes"
17th Strangely Brown
2651 Gary Butland Simon Turnbull Dog mod Suffering with niggling gear problems and only completed 5 races.
18th   247 Simon Roberts Lucy Lee Slug  The White Dog was sporting a mast stump to gooseneck height, but very little enthusiasm for light airs when Simon eventually arrived on Saturday...
19th Team Scotland 2674 Neil Cardno Ken Scott-Brown Slug Neil's Father had an accident shortly before the Nationals so they were unable to attend.
